The demand of hydrogen in transportation is quite negligible as of now, totalling to approximately 60 KT as of 2023, which is 0.6 per cent of the global hydrogen demand . The demand from heavy trucking industry of China was the main driver of the hydrogen demand as of 2023.
The hydrogen offtake in transportation faces some critical challenges with respect to limited supply of commodity, lack of infrastructure like hydrogen refuelling stations (HRS) and the cost of hydrogen. Nevertheless, many countries and organisations are actively assisting in the offtake of hydrogen in the road transportation sector, due to some clear benefits of hydrogen like rapid filling time, usability in conventional internal combustion engine platforms, scalability, limited requirement of critical minerals like lithium, cobalt, graphite etc. and overall integration with upcoming hydrogen clusters / hubs or valleys which are getting shaped up in countries like USA, Italy, Germany, Japan, South Korea etc.
It is expected that in 2030, the demand for hydrogen in surface transportation will increase significantly, driven by the establishment of clean hydrogen supply and refuelling infrastructure across several countries, like Japan, China, USA, South Korea, EU etc., which are actively announcing projects or financing in this regard.
