German govt adopts import strategy for green hydrogen

Germany is betting on sustainable hydrogen to decarbonise its economy and will largely have to import the fuel in future due to unfavourable local conditions for renewable electricity production. With its hydrogen import strategy, the government aims to secure a sustainable, stable, secure and diversified supply of sufficient hydrogen and its derivates in the long term. While the country's industry welcomed the progress, environmental groups were concerned of the inclusion of hydrogen produced using fossil fuels and then capturing and storing the CO2 in the strategy.
